UN Begins Process to Select Next Secretary-General

With António Guterres’ term ending in December 2026, member states prepare for a transparent and inclusive appointment of his successor. 

The United Nations has begun preparations to select a new Secretary-General, with António Guterres’ term ending in December 2026. 

Member states will nominate candidates who present vision statements, followed by informal dialogues and debates. 

The Security Council will then recommend one candidate to the General Assembly for final approval, ensuring a transparent and inclusive process.
